Seven days down, one hundred seventy-three to go.
Cubs gain a game on the Cards and Suds last night, then tonight they give it right back. If this team wasn't so good, it'd be frustrating. I'm chalking it up to an off night. Magic number is 29 to make playoffs.
So far this first week, there have been:
2 of my students suspended
1 class I had to cover (already!), thus losing my planning period
1 department meeting
1 faculty cluster-f**k about stuff I already know
2 kids I dressed down because I'd had it with their attitudes
6 days I had to walk home in 100+ heat and humidity
15 more minutes of teaching in one school day, the equivalent of being at school an extra 45 more hours this year.
0$ more pay for it.
$1,200 that I should be paid for it.
0 minutes added to my lunch half-hour
2 insubordinate kids who flat-out refused to do as I asked
2 kids with chronic attendance problems
2 classes where kids outnumber desks
2 so-perky-you-want-to-strangle-them teachers on either side of my classroom
35 classes
138 students per day
1 Open House night coming Monday, where, if trends hold true, maybe 10% of my kids' parents actually show up. That's 2-3 parents per class, folks.
Have I mentioned I hate teaching?

Yeah, and if I didn't complain, I wouldn't be as loveable. ;-)
On the plus side, I found my copy of Windows XP that came with my puter. I can use it to reinstall my semi-crashed version I currently have, so I can actually use MS Office again. Thing is, it will also most likely remove all my DOS files, like my documents, pics, games, and isp software, so I'm going to wait until I know I'm getting DSL (finally!) installed before I get XP reinstalled. I'm a little leery, so any advice about re-installing Windows would be appreciated.
Also on the plus side, a former student of mine visited me today. One of the best students I ever had. Nice kid, and smart, too. she's not infallible, but I know she's going to go far if she uses her common sense (she has what appears to be at first glance a real scuzzo of a boyfriend). One of my success stories, if I may say so myself. Just wish they weren't so rare. I think in my nearly quarter-century of teaching, I have maybe a handful of such kids. *sigh*
I have gotten two letters of appreciation by students, written on their own accord, ie not as a class project, and one letter to the editor, each telling me how grateful they were that I was their teacher. I protect these little documents with my life. Sometimes, they're what keep me in the field.
Finally, mom-in-law made me marshmallow fudge. Fortunately, the addictive qualities are counteracted by the fact that one piece is my limit, because it's so rich. She so spoils me...and it drives spouse crazy, which is a nice little bonus. :D
