Odds and ends
Cubs win today, playing the role of assertive parent, spanking the naughty child, today played by the Washington Nationals, for going against the parent's wishes and beating them yesterday, 13-5. A couple of the bats woke up, and ARam-bo got two three-run dingers FTW, 9-2. As predicted, Dempster won, going 7.1 solid, for his 15th win. Tomorrow, Rich Harden is on the hill to win this series, and if he pitches like he did in Florida, put another W in the books for the Cubs.
Magic numbers--To repeat as NL Central Champs: 29
To clinch a spot in the playoffs: 25
The bad news: Over half of the Brewers' remaining games are against sub-.500 teams, and over half are home games. After the Nats, only about a fourth of ours are against sub-.500 teams, and 14 of our next 33 games are on the road. Granted, we have six games against Houston, who is hovering just above .500, but they always give the Cubs trouble.
CUBS = Completely Useless By September? I think not.
In other, not necessarily new, news, it's humid as a sauna here, in addition to the usual heat. Dew point has been in the 60s or more here. For those not in the know, when the dew point is more than 55 degrees, evaporative coolers, like fans, do no good in cooling things down because of the humidity. Our air conditioning failed during the monsoons' last gasps last year, and it was pure hell trying to sleep those two nights waiting for the a/c to get fixed. Three more weeks and the air here should wring out its moisture and we can go back to having a dry heat again.
#2 son is going Extreme Bowling tonight with friends. We old folks used to call it 'Moonlight Bowling'. It was more fun in my day, when you got money for getting strikes with a colored headpin, or converting splits, or like that. I used to be a pretty fair bowler before I quit the game...used to average around 185. I used to be on two leagues a week before the kidlets came along. Now I haven't bowled in years. Go figure.
Parent night at our school is Tuesday. If 20 of my students' parents show (about 17% if you do the math), I'll be dumbfounded. The only time I had that many parents show was the one year I taught a gifted math class.
I tried reinstalling Windows XP, but now it won't recognize that I have the reinstall CD in the CD drive. Lovely. So much for that. Online tech support, here I come.
Snack du noir: Milky Ways and milk. Yum.
