Some observations
Trying to get past the crap that was my Friday, I tried to take my mind off it this past weekend. Here's what I came across:
1) Got in touch with my best friend in the whole world, and found out her dad of 75 years has bladder cancer. He has already lost a leg to cancer, and can barely walk, is dependent on a wheelchair and caregivers, which are both draining his bank account. My best friend has been near her dad constantly, helping him whenever possible, but the stress is evident, and I spent most of the phone call talking her through her tears, feeling terribly ineffectual over the hundreds of miles separating us. I did get her to laugh on a couple of occasions (I've heard I have a fairly average sense of humor), but I know her mind was a half-million miles away, worried about her dad.
A few hours later, #1 son called. He said he was doing well, but there was a noticeable tinge of sadness in his voice that told be otherwise. I was the only one home, so I think he was disappointed that he could not talk to his mom and brother as well.
That kind of put some perspective on the crappy Friday I had. Whoever ordered me the reality check, it's arrived. :-)
2) Ever notice, while you're driving, that you always arrive at your destination right at the moment a favorite song comes on the radio? Moreover, have you ever driven around the block repeatedly until the song was over?
*raises hand*
Today, it was Grand Funk Railroad's "The Loco-Motion". I almost extended the ride for "Little Deuce Coupe", which played next, but I decided not to....it was tough, though.
3) My day off is already chock-full of stuff to do. I have to get the tires rotated, pay the car insurance, get #1 son some toiletries that don't cause him to rash up (I wish that Axe or Tag spray did--that stuff is vile, and both sons insist on using it), get the cracked pane of glass fixed, along with the deadbolt, and then mail the ebay stuff. Hopefully, when I'm done, I'll be able to hook my puter up to wireless broadband.
I already dropped off my lesson plans, with instructions to take no prisoners with that last-period class. Finishing those plans felt pretty good.
4) I had chocolate milk, made from Hershey's Syrup, for the first time in years tonight. It was a little sweeter than I remember. Makes me recall the days where friends would come over, and we'd snack on pb sammiches on home-style bread (you know, the kind with that gritty flour on top of every slice) while stirring Hershey's into glasses of milk, in between games of pool in the basement.
5) Still warm here--above normal mid-80s, when it should be about 10 degrees cooler. We heard that my former home town was getting snow this past week.
6) Iowa and Dallas both won, although baseball spring training cannot get here soon enough.
And now, off to pack and package ebay stuff, and then off to crossword myself to sleep.
