i_calql8: (Cubs win!)

--Cubs win, 7-0, in a great game pitched by Z. Kinda nice watching the Cubbies completely dominate the Nats, especially after that disappointing opener. Let's take the series tomorrow.

Cubs magic number to repeat as Central Division Champs: 137. Yeah, I know, it's early. After the Nats, we have a tought series at home where I hope we can avenge our slow start against the Brewers, and then we go on the road at Busch against the Cards. We've owned the Cards in the past couple years, but still, we've had a tough time winning at Busch. Interesting week ahead. GO CUBS!

--I played Guitar Hero II for the first time today. #2 son and I teamed up, and it was pretty fun. I admit playing on easy setting and taking the bass line on most of the songs. And btw, the bass line on Black Magic Woman is a b***h, even on Easy. I still need to master those fast multi-note functions, and I hope to hit Medium soon.

My favorite GH accessory so far? The whammy bar. Pisses #2 son off when I use it and miss my next note because of it. *snicker*

--Only 20 days of school left before finals. I put in my application to teach summer school Friday. I requested only Algebra...no remedials for me, no sir. My remedials classes are shrinking, too--lost two to non-attendance last week, and one more to a long-term suspension because he was caught stealing. I had close to 60 kids in the two classes combined earlier this semester--now it's at 47.

Back when I was younger and more idealistic, I used to be concerned about kids who never showed up for class--then I figured out that most of their parents 1) never show up for open house at our school, 2) don't seem to have much of a priority for education, and 3) are harder than hell to contact if I need to, when there is a behavior problem/detention/referral, and often never update their phone numbers. Therefore, if they don't care, and their kids don't care, why should I? I have kids who could succeed, who do care, that my time and effort could get over the hump.

And this is why I will never be nominated Teacher of the Year, lol.

Oh, and I love our guidance counselors so much when they take a kid who passed Algebra 1, and is wallowing in Algebra 2 to the point of not passing, and put him into my remedial class. Why? So the kid can get his two math credits and graduate! Look, I realize that getting a kid his diploma is important, but I have about a half dozen kids who should be in Algebra 2, but are too lazy to work hard and get a C in the class, and they're finishing the remedial assignments in 5-10 minutes, and spending the rest of the time goofing off with kids who can't afford to be goofing off. Of course, it's too late in the semester to threaten the kid with sending him back to Algebra 2, so my hands are pretty tied in getting them removed. Lovely.

/end rant

--Both tax refunds came at the same time yesterday! Yayyyyyy!!!

--Enjoying the "Burn Notice" reruns on USA. I like the series, but as with all things, Bruce Campbell rules over all.

--No more 'Torchwood'! AND THEY KILLED TOSH!!! Possibly the hottest brainy female to come along in ages, and they offed her! Those bastards! Damn. Oh, well, there's always reruns. I'll be in my bunk.

--In similar news, do you think I could find any copies of 'Firefly' anywhere in this god-forsaken cultural wasteland where I live? Sheesh. I really don't want to go the eBay route with DVDs, so it looks like I'll have to order it through one of the video stores here. Of course, there will be the umpteen-day wait and the blank stare of the salesperson asking me 'What's that?' *sigh*

--We got #1 son's AIMS test results. AIMS is the reading/writing/math test students have to pass in order to graduate. We knew he'd pass the math, but we found out today he passed the reading and writing tests, too, and on his first try! This is incredible...he hates to read, and writing is not his strongest suit either, but he met state standards, so he just needs sufficient classroom credits to graduate now, and he'll have his diploma. Awesomeness!

That's a relief...nothing more embarrassing than using an unfamiliar phrase the wrong way. :-)

But now I have to come up with someone to fill in the open spot on my "Ten TV/Movie Characters I'd Bed in a Heartbeat" list. Unless I was into necrophilia. Which I am not. Ew.
