And now, your LJDQ Moment of the week, courtesy of my pub trivia night:

Q: The 1978 movie "The Boys from Brazil" involved a plot to clone who?
A: (on two answer sheets!): Pele

I completely cracked up when I saw this...then I repeated myself when I saw it on another answer sheet.

Teh funneh is still not back yet...I may have to take another week off the LJDQ. :is ashamed:

Okay. So. I have had my knuckles rapped with the ruler of my peers on more than one occasion for claiming that Star Trek: Deep Space 9 is boring (which it is). After seeing the first few episodes first run, the primary problem I have with it is that the characters are, for the most part, unappealing.

Sisko is a cipher to me. After the first few episodes, All I learned about him is that he has a grudge against Picard because his wife was killed by the Borg, and he likes baseball. Not much insight as to how he runs Ops, and he really seems like a fish out of water--not what you want to see in a command figure.

Kira and Odo are wound up so tightly that if they ate coal for breakfast, they'd crap diamonds by lunch. I thought they would do more with the shapeshifting aspect of Odo, but that's been a complete disappointment. Kira does have a very fetching tush, though.

Quark is an annoying one-note character, and Jake is Wesley Crusher minus the stratospheric IQ, making him a typical annoying teenager. Dr. Bashir is competent, but comes off as callow. Now, they do score points for adding Miles O'Brien--I like his down-to-earth character, and little Molly is so kyoooot--and then they had to go and add Worf, the most boring character from Next Gen, although I much prefer him in charge of DS9 security instead of Enterprise security.

The only character I would want to be around would be Dax. And not because she's hot, either (frankly, I think she's hotter on 'Becker'). She's intelligent, quick-witted, funny, irreverent, and not afraid to let loose once in a while.

Then there are the bad guys. The Cardassians seem to have taken a back seat to The Dominion and Jem Hadar, whoever they are. In the few episodes I have seen, I haven't heard more than a mention of them, so I have no idea how bad-ass they are. I'm pretty much declaring so far that while Cardassians > Klingons, the Borg > The Dominion.

As for pinnacle episodes, the popular choice for best Next Gen episode is 'The Best of Both Worlds'. I would argue that the most riveting Voyager episode is "Year of Hell", where the time-altering Krenim would give the Borg and Dominion a run for their money. But the best DS9 episode is "Trials and Tribblations", a retooling of a TOS episode? Please tell me there is a more compelling, can't-miss-it DS9 episode.

Admittedly, I'm not fond of the political interactions in the plots of the stories. Maybe that's where they lose me. I mean, you initially just had the Cardassians/Bajorans tensions. Now we apparently have the Ferengi, the shapeshifters, the Trill, and the Klingons thrown in the mix, too.

It's been a while since the last Trek challenge I placed before my friends, so here's one: Convince me that DS9 is worth watching. Are there any done-in-one episodes that you would recommend/avoid? What makes the characters interesting to you? What did I miss with my evaluations? Did I just walk in the middle, and instead have to see it from the beginning again? Please, enlighten me. Educate me. Convince me.

I apologize if I ruffle a few feathers. I would like to enjoy this series, I really would. It's just that the episodes I have seen have either mostly put me to sleep or make me reach for my remote. Maybe I need a little guidance to change my attitude. If you're up to the task, I await your response. :-)

No, not dead, just closer to it than most.

You forgot:
"Okay, let's have a Ferengi join Starfleet Academy." FAIL.
"Let's have a tailor in DS9." UH, HELLO, REPLICATORS? FAIL.
"Let's have romantic tension between Odo and Kira." FAIL TIMES TWO.

Funneh broken, that's why no quizzing for a bit. Second semester does start tomorrow for me, though, so I may need to get back to the quiz for sanity's sake. On the other hand, one fewer set of answers for you mods to pore over, right?
